1/22/16

We had a short but fun week here in Kindergarten.

We celebrated Jack Z's super kid day this week. His family came in and share donuts and gummy worms with the class. Jack's sister read us the story "I Really Like Slop" by Mo Willems.

Sarah's sister and dad came in as our Mystery Readers this week and read "Two is Enough" by Janna Matthies.

In math this week we got to explore a calculator and learn a little about what it helps us to do.
Have your child see if they can identify a few buttons on a calculator at home.

Ms. Woltmann's sister, a paramedic and nurse, came to visit us. She shared all about her job, showed us some of her tools, and we even got to listen to our heartbeats!

Be sure to start bringing in empty cereal boxes (peanut free) for your child's valentine 's day box. We would love to have these by February 11th.

Have a great weekend,
Ms. Ardito

1/15/16

Our second week of this semester was busy and exciting!

Don't forget that it is a three day weekend in honor of MLK jr. day on Monday.

We finished our 5 senses unit with 2 science experiments.
On Monday, we did a taste test! We talked about our taste buds and how they send messages to our brains about how things taste. We tried a lemon, baking chocolate, potato chips, and an oreo. We learned that certain foods can taste sour, bitter, salty, or sweet.

Ms. Woltmann ended our senses unit by making cinnamon/chocolate play-doh with the class to talk about our sense of smell. We learned that our noses send messages to our brain to tell us if a smell is pleasant or unpleasant.

Math night was so much fun. We are so happy so many families could make it.

Kate's dad came in as our mystery reader this week. It was such a surprise!

In math this week, we learned about the addition symbol. We learned that the plus sign tells us to add together the two numbers on either side. Have your child tell you a "number story" and write the number sentence that goes along with it using the addition symbol.

On Thursday, we had a scientist from "High Touch High Tech" come in to teach us more about our senses. It was a great way to end our unit!

Have a wonderful long weekend!

See you Tuesday,
Ms. Ardito

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! We jumped back into the new year without missing a beat.
We have been discussing New Years resolutions. Each child made up a resolution for themselves which are hanging up outside the classroom. Come take a look so you can hold your child accountable!

We would love to see you at Math night on Tuesday January, 12th from 6-7pm. We will meet in the Kindergarten classroom to do activities and play games together. This is a great opportunity to see what your child is learning and the strategies we use in our room. It will be so much fun!

In math this week we continued to work on our addition and subtraction skills. We played a game called "disappearing train" where players roll a die and remove that number of cubes to try to be the first to eliminate all of their "cars" from the train.

We also explored a math tool called a pattern block template. This was a basic introduction to geometry.

In science we began our senses unit. We have explored sight, sound, and touch so far. For each we discussed how our senses work and the ways they help each other.

We explored the way sound travels in waves and through different objects. We listened to tapping on a bag full of water, to knocking on our tables with our ears pressed against them, and to whispers from friends across the room. We also learned that some sounds are helpful to us while others can be enjoyable.

We explored hand mirrors to try and walk around the room using our sense of sight.

We celebrated Mili's birthday this week. Her family came in and shared rice krispie pops and read "Princess Mili and the Mysterious Noise", a personalized story book.

Ash's mom came in as a mystery reader and read "Rosie Revere Engineer" by Andre Beaty. She also read "Little Pea" by Amy Krause Rosenthal.

We ended our week with William's super kid day. His family came in and shared popsicles and read "Curious George Takes a Trip" by H.A Rey.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms. Ardito
