Last week, Sam's family came in to celebrate his Super Kid Day. They brought in donuts and read "Have You Seen My Dinosaur?" by Jon Surgal.

We started our study of Dr. Suess in preparation for his birthday celebration. We have been reading many of his books and noticing the patterns he uses in his writing including rhyming and repetition of sight words.

We have read Dr. Suess books like "Horton Hears a Who", "Oh the Places You'll Go", and "The Lorax". We talked about Dr. Suess' passion for justice and the meaning behind each story. Ask your child what Dr. Suess wanted us to learn in each one!

Feel free to start taking home your child's 100's day poster from the hallway. Some have fallen and may be in our classroom if you do not see them outside.

Ms. Woltmann and I are looking forward to seeing many of you at the auction tomorrow. We are offering a scavenger hunt and pizza party to 4 kids as our "teacher treat". We will also have the baby book up for auction.

See you tomorrow!

Ms. Ardito

We had such an exciting week here in Kindergarten!

We spent the first half of the week getting ready for Valentine's and hundreds day! The kids created their own valentines art projects to decorate the classroom.

On Wednesday, we celebrated our 100th day of school. We had stations with hundreds of activities!

We ate 100 pieces of snack, created a book filled with hundred day activities, and played 100 day games!

We also celebrated Indie's Super Kid Day. Her family came in and shared cupcakes and read "Fancy Nancy and the Fanciest Doll in the Universe" by Jane O'Connor.

Then on Friday we had our Valentine's Day party. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered. The kids had a wonderful time.

As a reminder, we have a three day weekend in honor of President's Day. Enjoy the time off and happy Valentine's Day!

See you Tuesday,
Ms. Ardito

2/5/16

Hi Families,

I hope everyone had a great week.  Here are some highlights of our last two weeks as I was traveling for a few days.

Last week, we celebrated Thea's Super Kid Day with her whole family. They shared Rice Krispie treats with the class and read "Iggy Peck Architect" by Andrea Beaty

The kids spent time during free play getting to observe our hermit crabs!

Ada's mom came in as a Mystery reader and read "I'm so Mad" by Robie H. Harris.

Jack M's dad and Grandma also came in as a Mystery readers! His dad read "If I ran the Circus" by Dr. Suess. And his Grandma read "The Incredible Book Eating Boy" by Oliver Jeffers

This week we got right back into the swing of things after I was gone.
We have been learning about Groundhog's Day and the surrounding traditions. We talked about how Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his hole on February 2nd and people gather around to find out if he will see his shadow. We discussed that groundhogs can't really predict the weather, but that it is a special tradition and marks the nearing of spring.

February is dental month and we began our study of teeth. We studied the different types of teeth in our mouth. Our incisors, canines, and molars help us to chew and eat our food. We even created our own! Ask your child to sing you our teeth song.

We also learned how important our teeth are and the ways we can take care of them.
We did an experiment to see what sugar does to our teeth if we do not brush. We put hardboiled eggs into different types of beverages: Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Sprite, and water. We let them soak over night and when we checked the next day they were stained and brown! We used toothbrushes to do our best to clean them to see how important it is to brush our teeth. Especially after consuming sugary things!

In math this week we learned a new vocabulary word: Attribute. We spent time sorting pattern blocks and other materials based on things they have in common. We even played a game called "fishing for kindergartners" where I "catch" several students with a similar attribute and the rest of the class has to guess what it is.

Please continue to send in empty cereal boxes when you can so the kids can decorate them to collect valentines in.

Also, hundreds day and Valentines Day are next week! We would love to have your child's poster by next Wednesday. Let me know if you would like a class list to help with your valentine cards.

I know we have a busy week ahead so thank you for all you do to help us at home!

Ms. Ardito
